This series gets better and better with each book. Dead Broke, the latest, is as fast moving and witty as previous entries in the series, but has a more complicated plot. Zelvin has also more fully realized her three wonderful characters: Bruce, a recovering alcoholic, Jimmy, also a recovering alcoholic and Barbara, Jimmy's live-in girlfriend, a co-dependent.As the book opens, Jimmy announces he is deeply in debt and now belongs to DA (Debtors Anonymous) as well as AA, so he is not going to be able to take Barbara to California for her fortieth birthday as planned. Barbara announces she's pregnant and is worried that Jimmy will not be able to take care of her and the baby.
Bruce has a girlfriend, Cindy, a cop and a recovering alcoholic and is happy.
Then Jimmy's DA sponsor is murdered in Starbucks and Cindy is assigned to the case. Cindy is afraid she'll have to reveal she's in AA and tells Bruce she can't see him while she's on the case. Knowing Jimmy, Barbara and Jimmy, she also warns him not to get involved, to leave the investigation to the police.
Of course, Bruce and Barbara can't resist and they convince Jimmy that they can investigate the AA and DA connections better than the police and they are off and running.
In addition to a good mystery and a fun read, Zelvin gives the reader a peek into the AA world. I highly recommend Dead Broke..

This is another in an ongoing series of funny "cozy mysteries" set in New York (where I live), featuring main characters who are in 12 Step programs of Recovery (like me). You don't have to be either to enjoy the humor, the interesting relationships and the puzzle.
Recovering alcoholic and amateur sleuth Bruce Kohler and his bff, Jimmy, also a recovering alcoholic, and Jimmy’s longtime partner, Barbara, a Friend of Lois’s, are drawn into another mystery when Jimmy’s Debtors Anonymous sponsor, Sophia, winds up dead. Jimmy’s a suspect, because of his connection to Sophia. The police find his Fourth Step inventory in Sophia’s e-mail, and immediately add Barbara to the suspect list because of things he said about Barbara in the inventory.
This fourth entry in the series is told in alternating points of view between Bruce, Jimmy, Barbara and Bruce’s cop girlfriend (also an AA member), Cindy. Normally that annoys me, but it seemed to work for this plot. It gave me insight into what each character was thinking/feeling/focusing on. And it was interesting getting into each character’s head.
Speaking of annoying, let’s talk about Barbara. She generally irks me, but I found her particularly irritating in this book. She’s pregnant and her hormones are driving the bus. Several times I found myself thinking, boy, she needs to get her ass to a meeting, or call her sponsor and confess to her bad behavior of manipulating Jimmy when she knows it’s wrong. That’s a testament to the strength of Zelvin’s writing, making the characters so believable that you want to smack them upside the head.
I have enjoyed every one of the Bruce Kohler books, including this one (even tho’ I really did want to slap Barbara, more than once). The stories are well-written and believable, the 12-step subplots ring true, and the characters are entertaining. I look forward to the next Bruce Kohler story.
We're back in Manhattan again with recovering alcoholic Bruce Kohler and his crime-fighting friends, sleuthing their way from one twelve-step program meeting to another to track down a killer, with a side trip to sit shiva for the murder victim. Bruce's friend Jimmy is newly broke, Jimmy's girlfriend Barbara is expecting, and Jimmy's sponsor from Debtors Anonymous has been found poisoned to death in a Starbuck's. Everyone is under suspicion. Bruce finds himself dragged into the investigation to clear his friends, even as his policewoman girlfriend, Cindy, breaks up with him to improve her chances for a promotion to detective. Lucky for us, we get to follow her probe of the case while Bruce pursues his own angles. The victim is enigmatic, beautiful, a hard charger in business, so little understood by her husband that he doesn't seem to know she's been in recovery from anything. An intriguing murder case seen through the lens of the twelve-step world. You may find yourself asking What is an addict? What is a recovering person? For example, the adulterous couples who surface in the course of the story—are they addicts, or are they merely pursuing an interesting hobby?
Starbucks is the perfect place to relax--unless someone puts cyanide in your coffee. Like Zelvin's other mysteries about recovering alcoholic Bruce Kohler, DEAD BROKE provides enlightening glimpses into twelve-step programs as well as a well-plotted whodunit. I hadn't known that there's a Debtors Anonymous program for people who compulsively over-spend. Learning about how the program works was fascinating. Also fascinating, as always, are the relationships among the central threesome in the series--Bruce; his computer geek best friend, Jimmy; and Jimmy's spirited co-dependent girlfriend, Barbara. In this novel, the threesome becomes a foursome as Bruce's romance with his police detective girlfriend, Cindy, deepens and promises to become a lasting element in the series. All four central characters struggle not only with their relationships but also with addictions and career decisions. Meanwhile, they have a murder to solve as they try to untangle the motives of a number of colorful suspects. DEAD BROKE is sure to delight Bruce Kohler fans and to win new readers for the series.
